Nikita Bier Says X Will Soon Add Buy and Sell Buttons for…

X is preparing to add trading buttons alongside cryptocurrency and stock market data displayed within its social-media feed, according to former product chief Nikita Bier, advancing Elon Musk’s effort to transform the platform into a broader financial-services application. Bier said on August 25 that “trade buttons” are coming soon to X’s Cashtags feature, which already allows users to embed and view cryptocurrency charts directly inside posts.

His comments came while responding to criticism from members of the crypto community who accused him of suppressing crypto-related content while running product at X. “What are you talking about?” Bier responded, pointing to Cashtags, support for Solana and Ethereum charts and the ability to paste contract addresses for newly created tokens into posts. He added that trade buttons would arrive soon. No launch date, brokerage partner or complete list of supported assets has been announced.

Cashtags Already Bring Markets Into the X Timeline

Trading functionality would represent the next stage of a financial-data initiative X began rolling out earlier this year. X launched Cashtags in April, initially for iPhone users in the U.S. and Canada. The feature lets users search for stocks and cryptocurrencies and view real-time price charts and related posts without leaving the platform. Crypto support extends beyond major ticker symbols. Users can enter smart-contract addresses, allowing X to distinguish between tokens sharing similar names and display data for smaller on-chain assets. Stock-market data was subsequently integrated into the same experience.

The trading component has been planned for months. In February, Bier said Smart Cashtags would eventually allow users to trade stocks and cryptocurrencies directly from their timelines. He simultaneously clarified that X would not itself handle trade execution or operate as a brokerage. That distinction remains critical. A buy or sell button appearing within X does not necessarily mean X will custody assets, match orders or become a regulated securities or cryptocurrency exchange. The platform could instead function as the user interface while routing customers to licensed brokers, crypto exchanges or other financial partners.

Trading Fits Musk’s Broader ‘Everything App’ Strategy

The feature would move X closer to Musk’s long-standing objective of turning the social network into an “everything app” combining communications, media, payments and financial services. X has been developing X Money alongside its market-data products. The company announced a partnership with Visa in January 2025 to support payments infrastructure, while then-CEO Linda Yaccarino later said users would eventually be able to invest and trade through the platform. Musk said earlier this year that X Money had completed internal employee testing and was preparing for a limited external beta. Adding trading functionality to Cashtags could create an unusually short path between financial information and transaction execution.

A user reading a post about Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, Tesla or Nvidia could potentially open the associated Cashtag, examine price data and social commentary and initiate a transaction from the same interface. That integration could be particularly significant for cryptocurrency markets, where X already serves as one of the industry’s most important venues for news, project announcements and trader discussion. However, Bier’s latest statement should not be interpreted as confirmation that X itself is becoming a crypto or stock exchange.

Bier also stepped down as X’s head of product on August 5 and now serves the company in an advisory capacity, meaning implementation rests with the current product organization. X has not separately announced a launch timetable for the buy and sell functionality. The key question is therefore no longer whether X wants trading connected to its financial-data products — Bier has repeatedly confirmed that ambition — but which regulated partners will execute the transactions and how deeply the trading experience will ultimately be integrated into the timeline.
