Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan has renewed speculation surrounding a potential native cryptocurrency token after discussing an on-chain asset linked to the prediction market platform during TOKEN2049 in Singapore.
Speaking at the October 7, 2026 conference, Coplan explored the concept of a digital asset with programmable utility tied to Polymarket’s economic activity. His comments followed an earlier social media post that had prompted expectations of a possible token announcement.
However, Coplan did not formally announce a token, disclose a launch timetable or confirm an airdrop distribution. The renewed discussion comes as Polymarket expands its prediction market operations and faces increasing competition from platforms offering cryptocurrency-based trading incentives.
Although a potential token has attracted considerable attention, the distinction between executive comments and an official product announcement remains important for investors and platform users.
TOKEN2049 Comments Renew POLY Token Expectations
Speculation intensified on October 4 when Coplan responded to a social media post comparing Polymarket’s revenue with that of decentralized derivatives exchange Hyperliquid. The comparison claimed Polymarket had generated approximately $9.9 million in weekend revenue, against $2.64 million for Hyperliquid. It also referenced the fully diluted valuation of Hyperliquid’s HYPE token.
Coplan suggested he might discuss the subject at TOKEN2049, prompting speculation that Polymarket could introduce a comparable cryptocurrency.
During his October 7 appearance alongside Balaji Srinivasan, Coplan discussed an on-chain asset designed to provide programmable functionality within Polymarket’s ecosystem. Reports characterized the concept as an attempt to connect digital ownership with platform economic activity, although the precise rights or benefits associated with such an asset remain undefined.
The discussion builds on statements made by Polymarket Chief Marketing Officer Matthew Modabber in October 2025, when he indicated that the company intended to launch a token and conduct an airdrop.
Polymarket’s parent company subsequently filed trademark applications for POLY and $POLY in February 2026. Nevertheless, neither the trademark filings nor Coplan’s latest remarks establish that a token issuance is imminent.
Airdrop Eligibility and Regulatory Questions Remain Unresolved
The possibility of a Polymarket token has generated speculation about whether existing users could receive allocations based on historical trading activity. Potential eligibility factors discussed by market participants include trading volume, liquidity provision and account participation.
However, Polymarket has not published eligibility requirements, a snapshot date, token supply figures or a distribution mechanism. Its official help documentation, dated June 24, 2026, states that no token generation event or airdrop has been formally announced.
The platform currently uses pUSD, a Polygon-based ERC-20 token backed by USDC, for trading collateral and rewards. This existing asset should not be confused with the proposed POLY token. Any future distribution would also introduce regulatory considerations, particularly regarding token functionality and participation by US customers.
Polymarket’s regulated US business operates within a different framework from its international cryptocurrency-based platform, potentially complicating a global token launch. The company would need to clarify whether a native asset provides governance rights, economic incentives or other functionality before its regulatory implications can be fully assessed.
For now, Coplan’s remarks indicate continued interest in blockchain-based ownership and utility rather than a completed token launch. Until Polymarket publishes official distribution terms, airdrop expectations remain speculative, and users have no verified mechanism for claiming POLY tokens.
