Intel Stock Plunges 24% After the CFO Said 2027 Is Unlikely…

Intel stock fell 23.56% to $70.39 in overnight trading on Friday morning, a drop of $21.69 from Thursday’s $92.07 close that takes roughly $115 billion off a market value that stood at $486.69 billion when the regular session ended. The company had just beaten its own third-quarter guidance on revenue, gross margin and earnings, and Intel stock closed Thursday up 143.76% for the year.

What the market traded instead was everything the company said about the quarters ahead. Fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $15.0 billion to $16.0 billion implies a 6% sequential decline at the midpoint. The non-GAAP gross margin guide of 38.0% is six points below the quarter just reported, and chief financial officer David Zinsner told analysts that 2027 is unlikely to generate positive free cash flow.

Intel Stock Fell on the Guidance, Not on the Quarter Behind It

Third-quarter revenue reached $16.51 billion, up 21%, with non-GAAP earnings of $0.52 a share against $0.23 a year earlier. On a GAAP basis, though, earnings per share fell 33% to $0.60 from $0.90, so the headline profit growth depends on which measure is used. Non-GAAP gross margin came in at 44.1%, up from 40.0%, which is the figure holders of Intel stock had been underwriting.

The split inside the business is the reason Intel stock had run so far before this week. Data Center and AI revenue rose 78% to $7.32 billion, which Zinsner called “our strongest data center revenue growth in 15 years,” and it is now within $780 million of the client computing division, where revenue fell 5% to $8.10 billion. Intel Foundry revenue grew 58% to $6.70 billion. Chief executive Lip-Bu Tan said the “immediate priority is to unlock additional supply to meet extraordinary demand for our Xeon family.”

Against all of that, Zinsner put a date on the weakness in the consumer side of Intel’s business. “Looking ahead, we see the PC slowdown continuing at least through the first half of next year,” he said, which stretches the weakness two quarters past the holiday period that investors had been treating as the trough.

A Fatal Explosion at Fab 28 Accounts for $300 Million and Two Points of Margin

Part of the fourth-quarter guide that hit Intel stock is not a demand problem at all. An explosion at Intel’s Kiryat Gat plant in southern Israel on 14 October, caused by a gas cylinder and followed by a fire, killed two workers and left a third in serious condition. Intel said it was “deeply saddened” and is cooperating with the investigation.

Fab 28 was shut for about two weeks. Zinsner put the cost at “about a $300 million impact to the fourth quarter,” expects a similar figure in the first quarter, and attributed roughly 200 basis points of the 38.0% gross margin guide to the shutdown. Strip that out and the guided margin is 40.0%, level with the third quarter of 2025. Most of the wafer scrapping lands in the fourth quarter, and Zinsner described the assessment as early, which leaves the number open.

Investor Takeaway

Intel stock fell on a fourth-quarter guide whose midpoint implies a 6% sequential revenue decline and a six-point drop in non-GAAP gross margin.

Gross Capital Expenditure Holds at $20 Billion, and 2027 Goes Higher

Zinsner said “our 2026 gross capital expenditures remains on track to be $20 billion,” which is the same figure Intel has been carrying rather than a raise. Equipment purchase orders rose almost 40% sequentially, the 2027 budget is unfinished, and he said that year is unlikely to deliver positive free cash flow. Intel generated $5.08 billion of operating cash flow in the third quarter and $1.64 billion of adjusted free cash flow, against $21.85 billion of cash, $32.16 billion of short-term investments and $46.32 billion of long-term debt.

That warning is the third of its kind in 48 hours. Alphabet posted negative free cash flow of $9.07 billion for its third quarter after capital expenditure more than doubled, and its shares fell 13% on Thursday. Amazon reported negative free cash flow of $42.36 billion on a trailing twelve-month basis, a 386% deterioration, with quarterly property and equipment purchases of $77.26 billion against AWS growth of 39%. The pattern now runs from the hyperscalers through the neocloud operators borrowing against contracted backlogs to Oracle funding a $225 billion revenue target on bonds yielding above 8%, and it is the same question the data center bear case has been putting all quarter.

Intel stock sits on the supply side of that trade rather than the demand side, which is why the Xeon shortage and the margin guide point in opposite directions. Tan said he is “increasingly confident that our Intel 18A-P will be an attractive node for external foundry customers.”

Intel Stock Is Still Up Around 86% This Year After the Fall

The scale of the drop reads differently measured against the twelve months that preceded it. Intel stock was up 143.76% for 2026 at Thursday’s close and 121.32% over twelve months, so even after a 23.56% fall the shares are still ahead roughly 86% in 2026 on our arithmetic. The stock carries a beta of 3.74, which is the statistical version of why a guidance miss moves it this far.

Headcount accounts for a large part of how the cost base got here. Intel employed 85,100 people at the last fiscal year end, down 23,800 or 21.85% in twelve months, a reduction proportionally far deeper than the 60,000 voluntary exit offers Microsoft is running and one that has already been absorbed into the cost base being guided here. The next report is due on 28 January 2027, which is when the 2027 capital expenditure figure and the first-quarter Fab 28 charge both arrive.

Investor Takeaway

Intel stock is still up roughly 86% in 2026 after the overnight fall, so the drop resets a rally in Intel stock rather than opening a new drawdown from flat.
