Stripe Is Paying at Least $7 Billion for OpenRouter

Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter in a deal reportedly worth at least $7 billion, making one of its largest bets yet on becoming the financial and operational infrastructure behind the artificial-intelligence economy. Stripe and OpenRouter formally announced the agreement on August 19 but did not disclose financial terms.

Multiple reports nevertheless put the transaction well above $7 billion. The Information reported a $7.5 billion purchase price, while Axios put the consideration above $8 billion, mostly in Stripe stock. The valuation represents a dramatic increase for OpenRouter.

The startup was valued at approximately $1.3 billion during a May funding round, meaning Stripe is paying roughly six times that valuation only months later if the reported $7.5 billion figure is accurate. The transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the coming weeks.

OpenRouter Processes 10 Trillion Tokens Daily

Founded in 2023, OpenRouter operates a marketplace and gateway allowing developers to access hundreds of AI models through a single interface. The platform currently processes more than 10 trillion tokens per day across more than 400 models supplied by over 80 providers.

OpenRouter says its community has grown beyond 10 million developers and companies and that inference volume has increased by at least tenfold annually since its founding. Customers can use the platform to route requests between models according to factors including price, performance, latency and availability rather than integrating separately with every AI provider.

That positioning becomes increasingly valuable as the AI market fragments across OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, DeepSeek and numerous specialized model developers. OpenRouter’s customers include Nvidia, Zoom and Lovable.

The company says it will continue operating under the OpenRouter name with the same product, roadmap and model-neutral approach after joining Stripe.

Stripe Expands Beyond Payments Into AI Infrastructure

For Stripe, the acquisition extends a strategy increasingly centered on AI economics rather than conventional payment processing alone. Stripe already provides financial infrastructure to a large share of major AI companies. The company says 88% of businesses on the Forbes AI 50 use its platform, including OpenAI and Anthropic.

Revenue derived from AI and crypto companies has more than doubled year over year, while Stripe’s overall first-half revenue increased 41%. The company has also been developing tools specifically around AI usage.

Stripe introduced Token Billing to help businesses meter and charge for AI-token consumption and previously acquired usage-based billing company Metronome. OpenRouter adds another layer.

Rather than only helping a company charge customers for AI usage, Stripe can now participate in determining where that company’s inference workload is sent and how efficiently its compute budget is spent. CEO Patrick Collison described tokens as the central currency for companies building with AI, arguing that businesses will increasingly need to optimize scarce compute resources.

The deal effectively places Stripe on both sides of AI economics: helping companies monetize AI services while helping them manage the cost of consuming models. The purchase price illustrates how valuable that intermediary position has become.

OpenRouter raised only about $164 million before the acquisition and was valued around $1.3 billion as recently as May. A reported $7.5 billion sale would represent an increase of roughly 477% from that valuation. At Axios’ reported price above $8 billion, the premium would be even larger.

Stripe itself has not confirmed either number. What it has confirmed is the strategic rationale: as businesses increasingly depend on multiple AI models, routing tokens efficiently becomes an economic infrastructure problem. Stripe already built one of the internet’s dominant layers for routing money.

By spending at least $7 billion on OpenRouter, it is betting that routing AI intelligence could become an equally important business.
