Citadel Securities and BNY Complete First Tokenized US…

BNY and Citadel Securities have completed the first transaction involving a tokenized US Treasury security on a major triparty repurchase agreement platform, marking a significant development in the integration of blockchain technology with traditional financial infrastructure.

Announced on October 13, 2026, the transaction involved purchasing a two-year US Treasury note, recording its tokenized representation on BNY’s private digital ledger and subsequently using the security as collateral for overnight financing.

The transaction settled within minutes, compared with the conventional T+1 settlement cycle, under which Treasury securities typically settle one business day after execution.

BNY described the transaction as the first use of tokenized assets on a major triparty repo platform, rather than the first tokenization of US government securities globally.

The development demonstrates how tokenized assets can move beyond issuance and trading into collateral management and secured financing, two essential functions of institutional financial markets.

Treasury Transaction Connects Trading, Settlement and Financing

Citadel Securities purchased the two-year Treasury note through BNY using Tradeweb, an established electronic marketplace for fixed-income securities.

Following execution, a digital representation of the security was recorded on BNY’s private ledger, enabling settlement within minutes. Citadel Securities subsequently pledged the tokenized Treasury as collateral in an overnight triparty repo transaction, with BNY providing the cash financing.

Repurchase agreements allow financial institutions to obtain short-term funding against securities, commonly government bonds. In triparty arrangements, a third party manages collateral administration and operational processes. The completed transaction demonstrated that a tokenized security could progress from execution to settlement and financing through a connected digital workflow.

Unlike cryptocurrency transactions conducted on public blockchains, the operation used BNY’s privately operated digital ledger within an institutional market structure. The companies did not disclose the transaction’s monetary value, preventing a quantitative assessment of its immediate market impact.

Nevertheless, the settlement speed represents a meaningful operational improvement over conventional processing timelines.

BNY, which reported $62.6 trillion in assets under custody or administration as of June 30, 2026, is positioned to explore such infrastructure within established institutional settlement networks.

BNY Plans Digital Cash Expansion and Longer Trading Hours

The transaction forms part of BNY’s broader strategy to develop infrastructure capable of supporting increasingly continuous financial markets. The bank plans to introduce additional digital cash and tokenized deposit capabilities to facilitate blockchain-based settlement and institutional financing.

It also expects to extend operating hours for traditional settlement platforms handling Federal Reserve-eligible securities and US triparty transactions, potentially reaching European and Asian trading hours in 2027.

These developments could address limitations in collateral mobility, particularly when institutions need access to funding outside conventional US market hours. Tokenized securities may allow collateral to be transferred and deployed more efficiently, potentially reducing settlement delays and operational friction.

However, broader adoption will depend on interoperability, regulatory compliance, liquidity availability and integration with existing market infrastructure. The transaction does not establish that US Treasury markets have transitioned to continuous blockchain settlement.

Instead, it demonstrates a functioning institutional use case in which tokenization supported both securities settlement and short-term financing. For traditional financial institutions, the significance lies in applying blockchain technology to established market activities rather than creating a new speculative cryptocurrency product.

BNY’s next infrastructure developments will help determine whether such transactions can become routine across institutional Treasury and repo markets.
