Coinbase has increased its corporate Bitcoin holdings to approximately 18,000 BTC, reinforcing the cryptocurrency exchange’s long-term investment strategy as institutional adoption and digital asset financing continue to expand.
Chief Executive Officer Brian Armstrong confirmed the milestone during Coinbase’s third-quarter earnings call on October 29, 2026, stating that the company had recently purchased its 18,000th Bitcoin.
The announcement follows Coinbase’s quarterly regulatory filing, which disclosed 17,954 BTC held for investment as of September 30, valued at approximately $1.50 billion. Those holdings carried a cost basis of approximately $1.26 billion, indicating an unrealized appreciation of roughly $242 million at the reporting date.
The subsequent acquisition brought Coinbase’s investment holdings to approximately 18,000 BTC, although the company did not disclose the precise purchase date or transaction price. The milestone reflects Coinbase’s continued accumulation of Bitcoin despite volatility across cryptocurrency markets.
Coinbase Adds 2,565 BTC During First Nine Months of 2026
Coinbase‘s latest financial disclosures show that its Bitcoin treasury has expanded steadily throughout the year. The company added approximately 1,103 BTC during the first quarter, followed by 819 BTC in the second quarter and another 643 BTC during the third quarter.
Combined, those purchases increased its investment holdings by approximately 2,565 BTC during the first nine months of 2026. At the end of 2025, Coinbase held 15,389 BTC for investment, compared with 17,954 BTC at September’s close. The company’s accumulation has been particularly significant over a longer period.
Coinbase reported 6,885 BTC at the end of 2024, meaning its investment holdings increased by approximately 11,069 BTC, or 161%, over the following 21 months. The latest milestone represents an additional purchase beyond the September 30 reporting date.
Importantly, these figures refer to Bitcoin owned by Coinbase for corporate investment purposes. They exclude the substantially larger cryptocurrency balances held in custody on behalf of institutional and retail customers.
Customer assets remain separate from the company’s proprietary investments and should not be included when calculating its corporate Bitcoin treasury.
Armstrong Highlights Bitcoin’s Growing Role as Financial Collateral
During the earnings call, Armstrong reiterated Coinbase’s positive long-term outlook for Bitcoin, describing the cryptocurrency as an increasingly important store of value and financial asset. He emphasized that Bitcoin’s utility is expanding beyond passive investment as holders gain additional opportunities to use their assets as collateral.
According to Armstrong, Bitcoin-backed lending allows investors to access liquidity without selling their underlying cryptocurrency holdings. He pointed to financing products developed within Coinbase’s Base ecosystem as examples of how collateralized borrowing could support additional trading activity and decentralized finance adoption.
The company’s broader financial results also highlighted the growing importance of institutional cryptocurrency services. Coinbase reported an institutional transaction revenue contribution of approximately $92 million during the third quarter, while consumer transaction revenue reached $450 million.
Stablecoin revenue increased to approximately $307 million, reflecting the company’s expanding exposure to digital asset payment and settlement infrastructure. Coinbase also reported approximately $8.6 billion in cash and cash equivalents, providing financial flexibility alongside its cryptocurrency investments.
Although the company continues accumulating Bitcoin, its treasury strategy differs from businesses primarily focused on acquiring cryptocurrency through capital markets financing. Coinbase operates a diversified exchange and financial services business, with Bitcoin representing one component of its broader corporate balance sheet.
The increase to approximately 18,000 BTC demonstrates continued confidence in Bitcoin’s long-term financial role. However, Coinbase has not announced a specific future acquisition target or purchasing schedule.
For investors, subsequent financial disclosures will provide further insight into whether the exchange maintains its accumulation strategy and how its Bitcoin holdings contribute to overall corporate financial performance.
