Nexo Reaffirms EU Compliance

Key Facts

  • Nexo says its services across the European Economic Area continue without interruption under MiCA, effective from the 1 July 2026 deadline.
  • The structure relies on two licensed partners: Tangany for custody and DLT Finance for brokerage — not a CASP licence held by Nexo itself.
  • Tangany is a Munich-based custodian, MiCAR-licensed and BaFin-regulated. DLT Finance, operated by DLT Securities GmbH, is a Frankfurt investment firm licensed under MiCAR and MiFID II.
  • Public trackers and Nexo’s own 30 June client email indicate Nexo does not hold a MiCA CASP licence in its own name; it filed applications in Germany and Bulgaria in 2026.
  • Earn rewards and crypto-backed loans sit outside the partners’ MiCAR/MiFID authorisations, under Nexo’s own separate terms.

Nexo has said its services across the European Economic Area continue without disruption under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR), following the close of the transitional period on 1 July 2026. The digital assets platform operates in the region through two locally licensed partners rather than a crypto-asset service provider licence held in its own name.

The distinction is central to understanding the announcement. Nexo describes its setup as pairing its global platform with licensed European infrastructure, splitting custody and brokerage between two regulated firms.

How the structure works

Custody sits with Tangany, a Munich-based digital asset custodian that is MiCAR-licensed and BaFin-regulated. Brokerage sits with DLT Finance, operated by DLT Securities GmbH, a Frankfurt-based investment firm licensed under MiCAR and authorised under MiFID II, which acts as the trading counterparty for EEA client trades.

Under this model, the regulated activities — safeguarding client assets and executing trades — are carried out by the two authorised partners. Nexo’s own FAQ notes that Earn rewards and crypto-backed loans are offered under Nexo’s separate terms and sit outside the partners’ MiCAR and MiFID authorisations.

The licensing picture

Nexo’s release frames the arrangement as compliance “achieved ahead of MiCAR’s entry into force.” That compliance is carried by the licensed partners. Nexo’s 30 June client email did not state that Nexo holds a CASP licence in its own name, and independent MiCA trackers list Nexo’s own authorisation as an application in progress rather than a granted licence as of mid-2026. Nexo filed a MiCA application with Bulgaria’s Financial Supervisory Commission in February 2026 and structured an entity under German regulatory oversight.

The partner-led route is a recognised way to operate under MiCAR, and both Tangany’s and DLT Finance’s authorisations are recorded in BaFin’s public register and the ESMA register of MiCAR-authorised providers. Readers can verify current status directly via the ESMA register, which is the authoritative record of authorised providers across the EU.

What Nexo and its partners said

Yasen Yankov, Chief Product Officer at Nexo, said MiCAR is the most consequential regulatory framework digital assets have faced in Europe, that the company selected DLT Finance and Tangany against a non-negotiable standard, and that all Nexo services continue as usual following a testing phase, with no disruptions.

Martin Kreitmair, CEO of Tangany, described the arrangement as a blueprint for institutions navigating the European market. A representative of DLT Finance, named in the release as Senior Partnerships Manager Alan Kennedy, said the firm provides the financial market infrastructure and execution capabilities behind the client experience.

Context

The announcement lands as MiCAR’s transitional period closes and EU national regulators gain the power to act against unlicensed providers. As of May 2026, roughly 210 firms had received full CASP authorisation across the bloc, from a pre-MiCA population of more than 1,200 registered virtual asset service providers — a conversion rate below 18%. Germany, where both Nexo’s partners are based, had authorised the largest raw count of any member state, dominated by banks and specialist custodians.

Nexo’s release also describes the company as among the top three largest centralised crypto lenders globally as of Q3 2025. No source or methodology is given for that ranking, and FinanceFeeds was unable to verify it independently.
